Abstract

Sporulation in B. subtilis is a simple developmental system involving the differentiation of 2 cells and the synthesis and assembly of subcellular morphological structures. We have recently developed methods to visualise gene expression in individual sporulating cells. We wish to develop improved methods and apply these to a range of problems including the important hypotheses that the mechanisms regulating gene expression during development serve to coordinate the developmental pathways of the two cells and to keep the programmes of gene expression in register with morphological events. We will also develop and apply new light microscopical methods for determining the subcellular localisation of specific proteins.
