Abstract

We wish to understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in initiation of limb bud development and how locations and numbers of limbs are controlled in vertebrates. Our recent work suggests that FGFs are active in two steps of limb development; initiation of buds and subsequent outgrowth. We will apply FGF to chick embryos to examine underlying mechanisms. We will examine whether the same principles operate in mammalian embryos. We will use our knowledge about the role of FGFs in vertebrate limb development to examine the basis of limblessness in snakes.
