Abstract

1) To define sequences within the lat52 5' untranslated leader which mediate translational enhancement and to determine whether enhancement operates by a mechanism involving internal ribosome entry. 2) To determine the developmental regulation of the translational initiation factor eIF-4A and the potential involvement of a pollen-specific eIF-4A gene from tobacco in regulating translation of the lat52 transcript. 3) To investigate whether cellular proteins present in germinating pollen are capable of specific binding to the lat52 5' untranslated leader, and to isolate and characterise cDNAs encoding such proteins.
