Abstract

Previously, we have identified quantitative trait loci (QTL) that influence growth rate in selected lines of mice. We now propose to map these loci to a resolution of 1cM, and measure their effects on correlated traits. Molecular markers will be used to back-cross short chromosome segments onto an inbred background to generate partially congenic lines. The presence of QTL in a segment will be ascertained by measuring phenotypic differences between lines congenic for the presence or absence of the segment. The procedure will allow progress beyond coarse scale mapping to a scale at which, in conjunction with information from the mouse genome mapping project, the identification of YAC clones containing QTL and eventual identification of the QTL will be possible.
