Abstract

I have identified a group of five mutations that disrupt cellular differentiation in maize leaves. This proposal aims to characterise four of these bundle sheath defective (bsd) mutants. Double mutants will be constructed and characterised so that bsd genes can be ordered in the pathway(s) that controls photosynthetic differentiation in bundle sheath cells. In addition, the transposable element Mutator will be used as a molecular probe to clone the Bsd2 gene. This work will enhance our understanding of genetic interactions involved in cellular differentiation and will contribute to our understanding of the agronomically important C4 photosynthetic pathway.
