Abstract

Artificial selection will be used to generate lines of Drosophila melanogaster selected for increased or decreased cell size or cell number. Recombinant inbred lines derived from the selection lines will be used to locate loci with effects on the traits to chromosomal region. Major effects located will be tested for allelism with known loci in the region that might be expected to affect body size, by use of deficiency mapping. During artificial selection, the lines with be examined periodically for effects of selection on the adult fitness of males and females.
