Abstract

The work will use advanced behavioural and genomics methods to unravel the relationships between the psychological expression of ageing effects and underlying changes in the pattern of gene activity in brain. The experiments will ask questions about the extent to which ageing causes different gene activity changes in different brain areas and the precise relationships between any changes in gene expression and cognitive ageing. The experiments will also determine whether the impact of apparent beneficial practice effects on cognitive functioning in old mice are associated with particular pattern of gene activity. Understanding the molecular basis of such protective effects may help to ameliorate aspects of age-related cognitive decline.
