Abstract

To develop a novel, versatile and integrated bioremediation process based on the special properties of sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB), enhanced as appropriate by synergism with other organisms for biodegradation of associated specific recalcitrant organic molecules. The main objectives of this part of the co-ordinated research programme are to characterise metal accumulation and precipitation by acidophilic and neutrophilic strains of SRB; the influence of xenobiotics (and breakdown producers) on growth, sulphate reduction, metal availability and precipitation and physio-chemical factors (C, N, P, S, pH) on these processes.
