Abstract

The aim of the proposed research is to understand and predict the causes of ureteric stent failure. An interdisciplinary approach will be adopted, incorporating clinicians, materials physicists, theoreticians and experts in biomaterials-related infection, and we will use the complementary techniques of experimental simulation and theoretical modelling. In particular, we will (i) focus on the processes by which the stent surface encrusts and determine the influence of the urine composition, bacterial infection, the local flow field and the surface geometry and properties on the degree of encrustation; (ii) examine the factors governing urine flow in a stented ureter, since this has important implications for reflux; and (iii) assess the healthcare implications, with a view to designing stents that minimise the degree of encrustation and reflux.
