Abstract

Functional genomics requires comprehensive methods for analysing the phenotypes that result from gene deletion. These include methods for measuring the levels of mRNAs (transcriptome), proteins (proteome) and metabolites (metabolome). The relationship between gene expression and metabolite profile is complex. However, we have shown recently how metabolite profiles, determined by NMR, could be used to elucidate the function of unknown genes in yeast by comparing the metabolite profiles of strains deleted for these unknown genes with those deleted for known genes. The aims of this project are to explore the potential of this strategy for identifying gene function, and the use of NMR as a method for comprehensive analysis of the yeast metabolome.
