Abstract
It is proposed to study the fluorescence (approximately 340 nm) and hyperluminescence (approximately 500 nm on fs laser multiphoton near-IR excitation) reported for indoles and catecholamines and suggested as probes for intracellular imaging of serotonin. Our preliminary experiments suggest that hyperluminescence arises from a transient photochemical product which will be identified by laser flash photolysis and resonance Raman experiments. Hyperluminescence arising from biomolecules will be characterised (spectra, lifetimes, fluorescence anisotropy) on multiphoton excitation with a Ti:sapphire laser at approximately 700-900 nm and evaluated as probes of protein rotation and flexibility and for imaging of cellular processes.
