Abstract

Biofilm consortia with defined internal architecture will be constructed by sequentially attracting different microbial species to specified locations in a micro- electrode array, and subsequently immobilising the cells. Using molecular techniques (insertion of GFP genes and using microbe specific rRNA probes) the location of individual species and their activities will be monitored. The performance of the constructed consortia in terms of biochemical process rates of model substrates (chlorobiphenyls, benzylalcohol, nitriles) will be determined using GC/LC/MS. The aim is to exploit spatial organisation in consortia to give more efficient metabolism and enhanced protection against toxic stress.
