Abstract

The analysis of 2D electrophoresis gels is likely to be a key technique in proteomics for the foreseeable future. The capacity of information generated from gel images is limited by the highly interactive analysis that is required in using the current generation of image analysis systems. By taking a statistical, model- based approach we will develop a new generation of image analysis tools which will deliver a qualitative improvement in performance. Interactive analysis of images will be replaced by interactive training to generate a statistical model of the control images. This will then be used to deliver automatic reading of subsequent images and to provide a statistical basis for characterising differences arising in modified subjects.
