Abstract

2D electrophoretic (proteome) gels are imperfectly reproducible. To compare them it is necessary to align them to a reference gel, such that the same proteins appear in the same place, a process known as image registration. Currently this is done manually, which presents a serious bottleneck as this is slow, tedious and subjective. We shall automate this process by exploiting a recently developed approach which has the desirable combined properties of reconstruction, orthogonality, redundancy, locality and linearity. We shall effect its optimal parametrisation. This approach will also allow simultaneous registration and compression of proteome gel images.
