Abstract

The ability to generate new bone at the required site is a major clinical need, The following programme of work is proposed: 1) the isolation of osteogenic stem cells and osteoprogenitors; 2) the genetic modification of selected cells to express selected osteoinductive factors; and 3) the combination of the cells with novel biodegradable osteoconductive scaffolds to produce, in situ, new bone for clinical application. This project will establishing a tissue-engineered approach to the de novo generation of new bone for skeletal repair for replacement surgery and in cases on bone insufficiency.
