Abstract
Membranes exist that can allow selective throughput of molecules based on their chemical and physical properties. In all these cases the properties of the membrane are fixed e.g. ion exchange membranes and the solute throughput is dependent on these properties. In this proposal we outline the properties of a membrane whose characteristics are able actively to respond to the nature of the molecules on one side of the membrane such as to allow selective throughput - in other words a SMART membrane.
