Abstract

a) The development of microelectrode systems for the selective, electrokinetic, manipulation and separation of bioparticles such as mammalian cells, protozoa, bacteria, chemically treated micro-beads, viruses and proteins. Emphasis will be placed on developing travelling wave dielectrophoresis (TWD) electrode arrays to act as selective particle concentrators that interface with TWD particle fractionating devices. b) The concept of dielectric labelling will be explored and tested on model systems. Such labelling is expected to increase the efficiency of separation of closely related bioparticles, or of rare species in concentrated mixtures.
