Abstract

The aim of this proposal is to integrate a novel microelectrochemical single cell technology with established optical methods in order to, for the first time, correlate intra- (and extra-) cellular ion fluxes (including e.g. Ca2+ and pH) with the production of other metabolites (e.g. either lactate or adenosine). To illustrate the potential of this measurement system, in a collaboration with Glaxo-Wellcome New Medicines Discovery Division, we will use myocyte pathophysiology as a model to explore the application of micromachining in developing miniaturised high density single cell screens for the discovery of new therapies for cardiac ischaemia.
