Abstract

The stray field NMR techniques (relaxation, diffusion and imaging) are non- invasive. They allow the discrimination between bound and 'free' water within a soil sample at very high spatial resolution. The NMR signals can also be sensitised to reflect the pore size distribution. A new probe large enough for soil science studies, the first of it's kind, will be developed to: (1) determine the distribution of bound and free water in soil samples as a function of clay content, organic matter content and matric potential; (2) visualise the wetting and drying characteristics of whole soils of different types and pore size distribution so that transport phenomena can be evaluated as a function of initial soil mechanical state and matric potential. The techniques will also be used to visualise the movement and retention of pollutants and agricultural fertilisers (N and P) within soils.
