Abstract

Combining information from different studies can produce dramatic increases in the precision of key parameters for the evaluation of animal population dynamics. In this proposed study we shall investigate the information gain from combining data at a variety of levels; firstly, for estimating annual survival rates, in combining surveys, when several occur each year, in using diffusion models for movement and in combining recovery and recapture information from life-history data; secondly in integrating the resulting survival analyses with census and fecundity information, through novel use and adaption of Kalman Filter methodology. The proposal has grown out of two established and fruitful collaborations with biologists. It responds to the needs of intensive data collection techniques for which appropriate methods of statistical analysis have not yet been developed.
