Abstract
Vasopressin neurones of the hypothalamus fire in a highly characteristic, asynchronous bursting pattern, that optimises stimulus-secretion coupling at their neurohypophysical nerve terminals. Many of the intrinsic and extrinsic factors governing cell firing are known from electrophysiological experiments, but these cells respond to afferent input in a complex way. We propose to test our understanding of these cells by constructing mathematical models of their bursting behaviour, to correct any gaps by further investigation, and to test the resulting models by electrophysiological experimentation.
