Abstract

This project is designed to develop generic technologies suitable for the rapid and efficient identification and production of new enzyme activities, targeted for specific functional properties. Using direct PCR cloning from DNA isolated from environmental samples, and linked with specific expression-based selection methods, it will be possible to rapidly screen large microbial populations for desirable enzyme activities. It is predicated that this new and exciting technology may become one of the most important methods available for identification and production of specific enzyme activities.
