Abstract

This multidisciplinary project will investigate the mathematical modelling of biological systems and develop a generic approach that has the potential for wide application in the biological sciences. This approach will involve several stages, including: the formulation and simplification of `iconographic' computer simulation models and the objective statistical identification, estimation and validation of models based on data from planned experiments. In order to emphasise the multidisciplinary interaction and ensure practical utility, the modelling methodology will be developed within an extensive programme of experimental research on three topics in plant physiology: regulation of stomatal conductance; regulation of plant water flux; and short term regulation of plant growth.
