Abstract

The objective is to develop methodologies for processing of solid supported bilayer systems. This will involve attachment of fully hydrated lipid bilayer systems to gold coated surfaces using self-assembled monolayer technology and for incorporation of active proteins. To achieve this the processing will be controlled using novel apparatus which will enable simultaneous surface plasmon resonance and impedance spectroscopy measurements to be made. Solid supported bilayers have exciting new applications in biosensors, separation technologies, biocompatible surfaces and stabilisation of enzymes, and offer new opportunities for studies of membrane proteins complementary to those currently practicable using vesicle or multilayer preparations.
