Abstract

The project will define and address a strategically important but neglected area in applied ecology, namely the estimation of parameters of nonlinear models of population growth. The project will involve re-analysis of classical datasets using recent advances in maximum likelihood estimation, as well as extensive and detailed datasets for biological control of a nematode pest, Globodera spp. and a soil-borne fungal pathogen, Sclerotinia spp. Using these data for population interactions, particular attention will be given to the development and testing of protocols for the design of experiments to improve estimability of parameters of importance and to assist in discrimination amongst different nonlinear models for population growth of plants and microorganisms including pests, parasites and beneficial organisms. Protocols will also be developed for the design of ecological experiments to test the effects of environmental and treatment factors on model parameters.
