Abstract

The overall aims of this project can be summarised as follows: (i) Define the synergistic mechanisms that operate between the repertoire of enzymes that attack paper pulp hemicellulose and evaluate the influence these interactions have on the biobleaching process; (ii) Determine the role of the discrete domains in modular hemicellulases in the enzymes' capacity to hydrolyse the hemicellulose component of paper pulps; (iii) Utilise the data generated in objectives (i) and (ii) to construct novel multi- enzyme hemicellulase complexes, and to evaluate the potential use of these enzymes in the biobleaching process.
