Abstract

Signals from the gut to the brain are important in short-term satiety, but also in longer-term regulation of appetite and body weight. We have begun to unravel the complex neurocircuitry which is required to integrate signals from the gut with the more indirect regulators of food intake (the availability of food or energy stores, eating habits, etc.). We have identified a factor which appears to be involved in the physiological regulation of food intake, and that is ideally placed to affect this integration. This project will determine the site and mode of action of prolactin-releasing peptide on food intake and energy homeostasis, while considering the potential for the peptide to have multiple functions in the brain.
