Abstract

We will test the hypothesis that the predator contribution to successful pest regulation is due to particular functional groups of predators possessing shared ecological profiles. Using predators of aphids as a model, profiles will be generated after data-mining the literature and matched against a template of spatio-temporal aphid abundance to predict predatory impact. Predictions will be tested mainly by temporally defined analysis of aphid feeding by predators using novel molecular techniques. The probability that sustainability of pest regulation is related to predator biodiversity will be tested by measuring the degree of numerical predator species substitution within functional groups using data from long-term monitoring programmes.
