Abstract

This application is for 3 linked studies examining the behavioural predictors of weight gain in children, using a genetically sensitive design. It follows on from a previous BBSRC-funded project (Grant number 07409) comparing children from obese and non- obese families. Study 1 tests the hypothesis that food and activity preferences measured at age 4 will be associated with weight gain, and will partly mediate the differential weight gain associated with familial risk. Study 2 tests the hypothesis that parental feeding style moderates weight gain. Study 3 is a genetic analysis of the relationship of eating and activity preferences and parental feeding to weight gain across 7000 twin pairs. It also focuses on MZ pairs who are discordant for weight.
