Abstract

The protein needs of the elderly are controversial, some workers claiming a need for extra protein to best maintain muscle mass. Most work in this area has used nitrogen balance or isotopically determined amino acid plasma flux and oxidation but little work has examined the responses of muscle per se to altered availability of amino acids. It is however claimed that nutrient insensitivity exists in elderly muscle i.e. a diminished anabolic response to mixed meals or amino acids and carbohydrate mixtures. We aim to test this hypothesis by comparing dose and response between plasma amino acids and muscle protein turnover (and signalling elements such as p70 S6 kinase) in healthy young adults and well preserved or wasted elderly subjects.
