Abstract

The ability of soil to resist (stability) and recover from (resilience) environmental stress are key components of sustainability. We propose to conduct a multi-phase project to (i) derive methods for assessing biological and physical resilience, (ii) assess the resilience of field soil with particular attention to the effect of soil management, and (iii) investigate fundamental soil properties that affect resilience, the interdependency between biological and physical resilience, and that remediation of damaged soil through improving resilience. The research will provide soil scientists with a framework for assessing soil resilience that is supported by a fundamental understanding of the processes involved.
