Abstract

Sustainable deployment of disease resistance remains an important challenge which will increasingly rely on transfer of novel resistance specificities from wild species into a crop by marker assisted selection and genetic transformation. Evidence from Arabidopsis demonstrates that broad spectrum or species level resistance (SL resistance) can be inducible, conferred by multiple receptor-like proteins that are common determinants of race specific resistance. High throughput transformation has been established at HRI in brassicas, enabling us to systematically transfer large number of candidate genes from Arabidopsis into the crop and identify ones that confer resistance to brassica pathogens. The geographical distribution of such genes in Arabidopsis will be investigated, providing information for future deployment of SL resistance components in crops. (Joint with grant 16979).
