Abstract

Methods are now available to determine directly the impact of changes in land use/management on greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes between land and atmosphere and on the consequent change in global warming potential (GWP). We will use these methods to compare fluxes of CO2, N20 and CH4 from conventionally farmed arable land with those from grass ley and minimum tillage and organic systems, to investigate the sustainability of alternative systems in terms of contribution to global warming. We will use the flux data and data on controlling soil variables, to parameterise C and N cycling models, and then use the models to predict likely impacts of changes in land use/management on net GWP under the best available climate change scenarios.
