Abstract

The impact of current fertiliser management, and its legacy, on nitrifier diversity and concomitant N- transformation rates will be assessed by molecular profiling of nitrifier-specific 16S rRNA and functional genes and by determining the kinetics of both ammonia and nitrite oxidation in soils. The role of the rhizosphere in determining mixotrophic nitrite oxidiser population structure and activity will be assessed using 13C- substrates representative of Lolium perenne exudates in N-fertilised and unfertilised soils. This study will provide a mechanistic basis to the relationships between agricultural management practises, biodiversity and soil nutrient cycles. (Joint with grant 1/D15955).
