Abstract

We propose to use two automatically operating, vertical- looking radars (VLRs) to observe continuously the abundance and movement of insects migrating over southern England. The accumulated radar-derived information will be used to investigate the flight behaviour of selected taxa of aphid predators, to characterise the role of airborne transport in their population movements, and relate these to the spatio-temporal dynamics of pest aphid populations. The database will also be used to determine how VLR can best complement existing approaches to quantifying the migration behaviour of insects of agricultural importance. A key factor in the research will be optimisation of VLR to assign the insect targets to functional groups.
