Abstract

Sampling soil properties and mapping them is essential for precision farming and other practical problems of land and crop management. New developments in sensor technology offer scope for partial or total automation of this process in the medium term, but an essential component of this advance will be the development of efficient sampling procedures. This project addresses the problem. Sampling procedures will be designed which occur in phases. Each phase will generate information on the spatial variability of the property in question and use this to optimise the design of subsequent phases, ensuring that the final map is of adequate precision for the purpose without oversampling. The procedures will be tested on simulated spatial data sets and compared to conventional sampling procedures for mapping, and some will be demonstrated in field mapping of soil properties.
