Abstract

Brunstorm and Higgs have recently found evidence that restrained eaters do not learn flavour preferences based on flavour-flavour associations. Learning may be a major determinant of ingestive behaviour. Hence, their result is important, because it implies that dietary restraint can become understood in terms of the operation or otherwise of particular dietary controls. This proposal addresses two main research questions: (A) is an inability to learn related to the way in which the affective quality of flavours is regarded? (B) does this inability extend to similar forms of learning based on post-ingestional consequences? Results from this project may have implications for the development of dietary intervention techniques.
