Abstract

Using powerful new analytical techniques and rigorous stereochemical analysis of inositol phosphate content of potato we propose to define 1) the metabolic pathway(s) of synthesis/turnover of inositol hexakisphosphate (phytic acid, InsP6) and 2) the developmental stages at which these processes occur. Thus we will define the pathways and the developmental stages, the future engineering of which will have greatest impact on potato phosphate nutrition. Our existing inositol transgenics afford unparalleled opportunity to address the metabolic intersection of inositol phosphate metabolism and intermediary metabolism. The results have implications for the efficiency of phosphate utilisation and the nutritional value of this crop.
