Abstract

Insulin resistance underlies a collection of risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Based upon observations made by the Recognised Researcher on this award and others, we propose that the colon plays an important part in normal maintenance of insulin sensitivity. We propose studies in which colonic fermentation will be modified acutely and over the longer-term (4 weeks), in which we will investigate changes to adipose tissue and skeletal muscle metabolism in vivo, and gene expression in these tissues. Observations in intact subjects will be compared with those lacking a colon. The results of these studies would form a firmer basis for dietary recommendations for avoidance of the insulin resistance syndrome.
