Abstract
We will test the geographical generality of multivariate regression models that predict bird abundance from habitat variables. This issue is of prime importance for conservation in the agricultural landscape. Policy-makers require a scientific basis for prescriptions to conserve biodiversity at the landscape or regional scale, but the relevant research is almost invariably on local populations and communities. By developing predictive models from local intensive studies and testing them elsewhere, we will assess the validity of a crucial assumption underlying current agri-environment conservation. Birds are of particular interest because of recent declines of many species in agricultural environments and the urgent need for their recovery.
