Abstract

This project concerns a model-based analysis of two databases describing outbreaks of scrapie in Suffolk sheep. The aims are: to apply recently developed mathematical models to field data; to determine the range of parameter values consistent with the data; to relate these findings to current understanding of scrapie pathogenesis; to compare the dynamics of scrapie outbreaks in Suffolks and Cheviots; and to explore the potential impact of scrapie control measures. Different hypotheses concerning possible differences in the incubation period between genotypes, different stages at which sheep are infectious, and whether clinically 'resistant' sheep can act as carriers will be tested for consistency with the epidemiological data.
