Abstract
This study will look at the effects of adding sugar to the diet over four weeks, in the form of soft drinks. It is hypothesised that in the long-term people will compensate for the added sugar by eating less of other foods, specifically fat, and that if added sugar triggers sweet food consumption, this will only happen for a day or two. Therefore, there will be no weight gain. The labelling of drinks will also be manipulated. It is also hypothesised that people who tend to restrain their food intake will respond differently to those who do not. Measures used include food diaries, appetite and mood scales, weight and blood lipid levels.
