Abstract
The control of freezing- and drought-tolerance is investigated for applications in crop hardiness and post-harvest preservation, transport and processing. We build on recent progress in the Arabidopsis model, in particular the observation that the mutation sfr6 blocks expression of normally cold-induced genes. The role of SFR6 is investigated by mutational suppression, determination of the sfr6 mutation's effects on transcription factors and on drought tolerance, and by mapping it to a group of 20 or fewer candidate genes.
