Abstract
This project uses a novel triple labelling technique with stable isotopes of 34S, 13C and 15N to study the cycling of S and its interactions with the C and N cycles in agricultural systems. It will evaluate the factors controlling S accumulation in soil organic matter and the effects of S deficiency on C and N cycling under field conditions. The S functional groups within soul organic matter will be determined at the molecular level using synchrotron based x-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy, and the information on S species will be linked to the measurements of S turnover in a range of contrasting soils. The experimental results will be used to validate several simulation models of C, N and S cycling.
