Abstract
Disruption to both the response to palatability or satiety could lead to overeating and consequently obesity. To date these influences have only been considered in isolation, yet theoretically they must interact. This project explores this interaction through a series of closely integrated studies combining manipulations of palatability with oral, gastric and intestinal preloads. These studies also explore potential macronutrient-specific effects by comparing carbohydrate and fat-based preloads. Further studies examine whether the short- term enhancement in appetite seen with palatable foods has longer-term effects on appetite. Together, these studies will clarify the nature of the orosensory and post-ingestive influences on satiety. (Joint with grant D11030).
