Abstract

This programme grant is to systematically define the relationship between genetically-defined changes in plant cell wall-related proteins, singly or in combination, and the downstream consequences for cell wall molecular architecture and structural properties, and to explore the consequences of selected changes on the raw material quality of appropriate crop plants. The main model will be Arabidopsis, in order to exploit the opportunities offered by the new and emerging functional genomics technologies. The outcomes will be: a) a robust model of the functional consequences of cell wall modification that will underpin the rational modification of plant material qualities and b) an important resource of plant materials and probes for evaluation by UK end-user communities, both academic and industrial. (Joint with grants D10332 and D10335).
