Abstract
The decline of biodiversity in intensive arable farmland may be arrested by Integrated Crop management (ICM), but this is hampered by poor understanding of the spatial interactions between key components of the arable ecosystem. Ecological hypotheses will be tested within a natural cereal ecosystem, to isolate the mechanisms through which these interactions vary over different spatial and temporal scales during a growing season. Novel methodologies will measure the spatial pattern of counts of pests and of their natural enemies, and their spatial association, and relate these to key environmental factors. Spatially-referenced multi-scaled models and simulations will be used to assess the effects on predator efficiency, and to develop appropriate new ICM strategies. (Joint with 321/S10132).
