Abstract

We propose to test novel strategies and develop 'proof of principle' for controlling the level of phenolic acids in grass cell walls and their crosslinking to cell-wall polysaccharides to increase our understanding of their role in moderating rates of cell wall digestion and carbohydrate availability in the rumen. Strategies based on modification of the levels of phenolic acids both in pre-existing cell walls and incorporation into cell wall precursors by targeted and inducible expression of a fungal ferulic acid esterases gene will be tested. The efficiency of the gene targeting/induction strategies and the effects of these modifications on cell wall composition, plant development and the rate of cell wall digestion under rumen-like conditions will be tested in transformed cell suspension cultures and in regenerated transgenic plants.
