Abstract

Lipid metabolism in the postprandial period is important in determining cardiovascular health. Metabolic events following meals have only been explored in detail when one meal is given after an overnight fast. The two research groups involved have each shown that unexpected events follow ingestion of sequential meals. In particular, dietary triacylglycerol is stored in a pool of unknown nature or location, and rapidly released on ingestion of a second meal. We propose an investigation of the metabolic responses to sequential meal ingestion, concentrating on the underlying physiology, nutritional influences on the response, and its possible implications for development of cardiovascular risk factors. The study will be two-centre to maximise throughput, and to increase the gain from the complementary expertise of the two groups.
