Abstract
Behavioural tests will be developed to measure olfactory perception and cognition in the pig. The hypothesis that aerial pollutants common in livestock buildings affect olfactory perception by either desensitisation of olfactory receptors or olfactory masking will be examined with these tests. The comparative sensitivity of humans and pigs to four biologically relevant odourants will be quantified. Overall, this project should improve our understanding of olfactory perception in farm animals, which has importance for animal production, behaviour and welfare.
